Quicktime - Encoding

Using QuickTimePro to encode QuickTime files

To encode for QuickTime, you will need QuickTime Pro. You can download and install QuickTime Pro from www.apple.com. QuickTime is a free download, but the QuickTime Pro version is not free. See the documentation with the software for more information on system requirements and methods for connecting recording devices. The following instructions describe how to encode a file using QuickTime Pro.

  1. Open QuickTime Pro and go to “File” and select “Open File” and select the media file you wish to encode.

  2. Go to “File” and select “Export”.

  3. Select Export Movie to QuickTime Movie.

  4. Go to “Options” and make sure “Prepare for Internet Streaming” is checked and that "Hinted for Streaming" selected. Select “Fast Start” under Prepare for Internet Streaming.

  5. Under “Video” or "Audio", go to “Settings” and select the Compression type.

    Refer to the following table to select the appropriate codecs/compression types.

    Video MPEG-4 Video
    Sorenson Video
    Sorenson Video 3
    Audio AAC
    QDesign Music 2
    Qualcomm PureVoice™

  6. Select “Save”. The program will begin exporting the movie.

  7. Once the export process has ended your media file will be ready to upload to the streaming server for viewing.
